What if burnout was not the end of your career story, but the start of a new chapter? When you're deep in burnout, it can feel like everything about your career is broken. But for many of my clients, burnout also becomes a turning point, a catalyst for positive change.
Burnout as a wake-up call
For me, experiencing burnout was a huge wake up call. Without knowing, I had been slowly slipping into burnout for many years and it wasn’t until my physical symptoms showed up that I was forced to finally stop and look a little deeper at the root cause of the problem.
You see, for perfectionists and people-pleasers, burnout often acts like a warning light. It tells us that the way we've been working…overcommitting, self-neglecting, never saying no, is no longer sustainable.
Rather than rushing back into the same environment, many people (me included) use burnout as a moment to pause and ask: What do I actually want?
In a 2022 survey by Investors in People UK, over 30% of professionals said burnout had prompted them to consider a career change or shift in role. The pain became a push toward more meaningful work…every cloud has a silver lining!
Rebuilding with intention
Rebuilding your career after burnout doesn't mean starting from scratch. It means:
Identifying what matters to you now (your values, needs, strengths)
Letting go of old definitions of success
Creating boundaries that protect your wellbeing
This might also mean:
Moving into a more values-aligned role
Shifting from corporate to freelance
Negotiating for more autonomy, flexibility, or purpose
It’s not just about the job
Burnout recovery isn’t only about changing your job. It’s also about changing how you relate to yourself and your work.
What narratives are you carrying about your worth and your output?
What expectations are you putting on yourself?
This inner work is just as vital as the external changes.
Activity: Career reflection
Take 10 minutes to reflect and journal on the following:
What parts of my current or past work gave me energy?
What parts drained me?
What values do I want to honour in my next chapter?
If I weren’t afraid of judgement or failure, what would I try?
Your answers can become the foundation for a more intentional, sustainable career path, one that works for you, not against you.
