How to Get Your Spark Back (When You've Lost Your Sense of Self)
Do you ever feel like you're going through the motions of a life you've built but somehow lost touch with? Like everything looks fine from the outside, but on the inside you feel flat, disconnected and not quite yourself?
If you've been Googling things like "why do I feel so empty", "how to feel like myself again" or "why have I lost my motivation" this is for you!
And before we get started, I want you to know: you're not broken and you're not alone. What you're experiencing has a name, a reason, and most importantly, a resolution.

Why you've lost your spark
When we talk about losing our spark, we're really talking about what happens when we've been running on empty for too long.
Think of your capacity for life...your energy, your joy, your resilience, as a bucket. Every day, life pours things in from the top: work pressure, mental load, relationship stress, the relentless pace of keeping everything going. Your bucket also has a tap at the bottom, representing the things that replenish you - rest, connection, movement, doing something just because you love it.
And when life gets busy, we stop doing those things that replenish us and the tap starts to get turned off.
As time goes on and the tap remains turned off, our capacity reduces and the bucket eventually overflows.
The signs you've lost your sense of self
Losing your spark isn't always dramatic. Often it looks like functioning brilliantly but feeling completely numb on the inside.
Here are some of the signs:
You can't remember the last time you did something just for the joy of it
You keep waiting for things to calm down before you focus on yourself
You feel guilty for wanting more when your life already looks good
You've tried the apps, the journaling, the self-help books and nothing really ever sticks
You've lost touch with what you actually enjoy, want or need
Why the things you've tried haven't worked
If you've already tried apps, journaling or self-help books and found they didn't quite stick, it's not because you lack discipline or commitment. It's because most wellness solutions work at the wrong level.
When your nervous system is dysregulated, when your bucket has been full for months or years, you simply cannot think your way back to yourself.
Mindset work alone won't reach the problem. What actually works is starting with the body:
Practices that signal safety to your nervous system.
Movement that releases stored tension.
Breathwork that activates your parasympathetic nervous system and tells your body it's safe to relax.
These are the foundations that make the reflection, the identity work, the reconnection with joy actually land.
This is the missing piece that most wellness content doesn't talk about and once you understand it, so much starts to make sense.

How to start getting your spark back
Getting your spark back doesn't require a dramatic life overhaul, waiting until things are calmer, or until you have more time, more energy or more of anything (phew).
It starts small, consistently, with the right practices in the right order.
Here's what that looks like in practice:
Start with your nervous system. Before anything else, you need to feel safe enough to change. Breathwork, grounding meditations and gentle movement are powerful tools for this (and they work even when you have very little time or energy).
Reconnect with what brings you joy. Not what you think should bring you joy, what actually does. This might take a little bit of trial and error, especially if you've been putting yourself last for a long time.
Remember who you are underneath your roles. So much of losing our spark comes from losing touch with our identity outside of what we do for others.
Do it consistently, not perfectly. Small daily practices compound over time. Twenty minutes a day, done consistently, will change how you feel far more than occasional big efforts.
